Berkeley Psychotherapy Services
Our Berkeley therapists offer psychotherapy services at the Berkeley Institute for Behavioral Health and Psychological Services. Our therapists practice what is broadly called, psychodynamic psychotherapy. This form of psychotherapy has been shown by a very substantial body of research to be the most effective form of therapy for the broad range of human problems our therapists at the Berkeley Institute are here to help with. For some time there has been an increasing focus on what have been called “evidence based” psychotherapies such as “cognitive behavioral therapy.” Simply put this means that the approach has been studied using the scientific methods widely accepted as sound for determining the effectiveness of psychotherapy. Much of the research showing effectiveness has been based on relatively narrow therapeutic approaches. Psychodynamic psychotherapy embraces an integration of various approaches shown to be of value in solving the human problems within ourselves and between ourselves and others. In doing this work we seek to understand and increase our consciousness of the causes and effects of the problems that bring a person to psychotherapy. We look for and recognize those problematic beliefs and feelings that are more or less unconscious and bring them into the realm of choice. Read more about Berkeley Psychotherapy Services we offer
Berkeley Biofeedback Services
Our Berkeley therapists offer biofeedback services at the Berkeley Institute. We are all familiar with stepping on the scale to get feedback about our current weight or having our blood pressure measured. These are examples of simple biofeedback. Biofeedback highlights different psychophysiological measures for your awareness. Once your awareness is heightened, you have the opportunity to tap into your own unique physiology and way of healing. This awareness is not a temporary fix, but can be a learning that will last a lifetime. A comprehensive snapshot of your physiology can be obtained by looking at these measures and analyzing your “hot or stress zones”. Read More about Berkeley Biofeedback Services
Berkeley Forensic Services
Our Berkeley therapists offer Forensic Services at the Berkeley Institute. Forensic psychology is practiced in the context of litigation and mediation within the legal system and it addresses a broad range of areas and situations to which the knowledge and skills of psychologists may be applied. In our practice at the Berkeley Institute Dr. Leonard Schwartzburd and Dr Connie Zimmerman provide expert forensic services to Berkeley, Oakland, Albany and surrounding areas.
Dr. Schwartzburd has been qualified as an expert witness, examining and testifying both in civil and criminal cases in the Alameda County and Contra Costa County Superior Courts. He is also a Qualified Medical Examiner and has served both as an Independent Medical Examiner and an Agreed Medical Examiner in the California Division of Worker’s Compensation. Berkeley Marriage and Couples Counseling
Our Berkeley therapists offer marriage and couples counseling at the Berkeley Institute. Marriage counseling, as we see it, is largely about helping each individual to really see and hear the other, to be honest in a caring way, and to communicate in a non-blaming way about who they are and what they need. Marriage counseling takes great courage because it makes many people feel vulnerable and raises fears about loss and rejection. It has been our experience, however, that this kind of respectful engagement is far more likely to strengthen a relationship than to destroy it, and represents a fundamental value we bring to our work with couples at the Berkeley Institute.
